In the above word, the macron above the second vowel means you should hold the sound twice as long as you normally would.

Capital Letters

Capital letters in the pronunciation indicate pitch. This is not stress, or loudness. Rather, it is a slight rise in the tone. For example:

DOH-koh nee oh soo-mah-ee dehs kah.

The first syllable of the Japanese, DOH, should be voiced at a higher tone than the rest. It does not mean that the syllable is stressed, but that the pitch of the voice is slightly higher.
